Getting a good still out of moving pictures
A video frame is a photo the camera took thirty times a second, and sometimes the frame is better than any photo you got: the moment everyone smiled, the thumbnail that sums up a clip, a reference for a drawing, evidence of exactly what the screen showed. The tool decodes the video in your browser and copies the frame straight off the decoder at native size — no screenshot scaling, no player overlay. Two honest points. First, motion blur and compression: a frame from a fast pan is smeared, and frames between keyframes carry compression artefacts; scrub a few frames either side (arrow keys step in most players) for a sharper one. Second, the contact sheet is the quick way to survey a long clip — twelve frames at 320 px show where the action is before you commit to full-size saves. PNG preserves the frame exactly; JPG at quality 92 is a tenth the size and fine for thumbnails. Polish the still with the enhancer or the cropper; for a moving excerpt use video to GIF.
