The limits that matter are the folds, not the maximums
Facebook allows 63,000 characters and LinkedIn 3,000, but both fold the post after a couple of lines behind “see more” — about 477 characters on Facebook and 210 on LinkedIn — and most readers never tap it, so the number that decides whether your message lands is the fold, not the cap. Instagram's 2,200 caption limit likewise hides everything after roughly 125 characters until tapped. This counter shows those thresholds alongside the hard limits, and counts the way each platform counts: X treats every link as 23 characters regardless of length and CJK characters and emoji as two; SMS falls to 70 characters per segment once you use a non-GSM character like an emoji or a curly quote; Google Ads and Meta ad fields are strict. Honest note: platforms change limits without announcement and count edge cases differently, so a bar at 95% means “check in the app”. Why does X count my link as 23 characters?
X wraps every link through its t.co shortener and charges 23 characters flat, whether the URL is short or long. The counter does the same, and counts CJK/emoji as two as X does.
What is the LinkedIn ‘see more’ limit?
About 210 characters (roughly three lines) on desktop before the post folds; the first sentence has to carry the point. The hard maximum is 3,000.
Why does SMS show 160?
One text segment holds 160 GSM characters. Add an emoji or a curly quote and the message switches to a 70-character encoding, so it splits sooner.
