Photo to Sketch

The classic pencil-drawing effect — real image math, no AI, no upload.

About this tool

One slider, one effect, done properly: the classic pencil-sketch pipeline that turns edges into strokes and flat areas into paper. Fast, private, no AI — which means predictable results and nothing invented into your photo.

The four-step trick, explained

This effect is a beloved piece of image-editing folklore, taught in Photoshop tutorials for twenty years, and it works in four moves: convert to grayscale; invert; blur the inverted copy; then combine with colour-dodge, which divides the original by the blurred negative. The arithmetic has a beautiful consequence — wherever the image is smooth, original and blurred negative cancel to near-white (paper); wherever an EDGE lives, they disagree, and the disagreement survives as a dark stroke. Edges become pencil lines because edges are exactly where blur changes things. The softness slider is the blur radius in disguise: small radius, fine hard pencil; large radius, soft charcoal shading. What converts well follows from the mechanism — portraits, buildings, pets against clean backgrounds (strong edges, calm regions); dense foliage and busy textures are all edges, and render as mush. No neural network is involved: the same photo gives the same sketch every time, and nothing that wasn't in your photo appears in the drawing. Dither and duotone continue the stylisation shelf; the colour-blindness simulator is image math serving a different purpose.

Frequently asked questions

Is this AI-generated?

No — it's a classic four-step image operation (grayscale, invert, blur, colour-dodge). Deterministic, instant, private, and incapable of inventing details that weren't in your photo.

What does the softness slider control?

The blur radius inside the pipeline — small values give fine, hard pencil lines; large values give soft charcoal-like shading. Try both ends; different photos want different hands.

Which photos make good sketches?

Clear subjects with strong edges: portraits, architecture, pets on calm backgrounds. Busy textures (foliage, crowds) are edge-everywhere and turn to noise — that's the mechanism, not a bug.

Why is my sketch almost blank?

The photo is low-contrast — few strong edges for the dodge step to keep. Boost contrast in photo filters first, then sketch; the lines will appear.
