Why grayscale done right needs weights
Naive grayscale averages red, green and blue โ and looks wrong, because your eye doesn't weigh them equally: green reads brightest, blue barely registers. The standard photometric formula (0.299 R + 0.587 G + 0.114 B โ the same one broadcast television used to stay compatible with black-and-white sets) matches perception, which is why a red rose and green leaf that LOOK different stay different in a proper conversion and merge into grey soup in a lazy one. Practical reasons to convert: print shops and office printers charge colour rates by detecting colour content anywhere in the file; some journals require mono figures; grayscale scans compress smaller. Same honest trade as the compressor: pages are re-rendered as images, so text stops being selectable โ keep the original. Single images go grayscale in photo filters, and duotone is grayscale's stylish cousin.

Will this stop colour-printing charges?
Yes โ the output contains no colour anywhere, so printers and print shops that auto-detect colour content bill it as mono. That detection is exactly why a 'print in grayscale' driver setting sometimes isn't enough.
Why do my photos still look right in grayscale?
The conversion uses photometric weights (green counts most, blue least), matching how your eye judges brightness โ the same formula black-and-white TV used. Naive averaging would flatten them.
Is the text still selectable afterwards?
No โ pages are re-rendered as grayscale images, the same trade the compressor makes. Keep your original for editing and search.
Which quality should I pick?
150 DPI for ordinary documents, 200 for fine print or detailed figures, 120 when small file size matters most.
