What converting to PNG can and can't do
It can stop the rot: every re-save of a JPEG re-compresses it, and PNG ends that. It gives you a format editors and forms universally accept, and a base for adding transparency in an editor. What it can't do is undo damage already done โ JPEG's artefacts are baked into the pixels, so the PNG will be a faithful copy of the JPEG, not of the original scene. Expect a bigger file, too: lossless storage costs bytes, which is the honest trade. Going the other way, PNG to JPG makes files smaller instead.

Does JPG to PNG improve quality?
No โ it preserves exactly what the JPEG holds, artefacts included. What it prevents is further loss: PNG re-saves are lossless, so the image stops degrading.
Why is the PNG bigger than my JPG?
PNG stores pixels losslessly; JPEG compresses them approximately. For photos the exact version simply costs more bytes โ often 5-10ร more.
