Why HEIC exists and why it's still a nuisance
Apple made HEIC the iPhone default in 2017 because it stores the same photo at about half the size of JPG, with better colour depth — a genuinely better format that the rest of the software world was slow to adopt. So the files still bounce off Windows machines without a codec pack, older editors, web upload forms, printers and government portals, and the fix is a round trip to JPG (universal, lossy, small) or PNG (universal, lossless, larger, keeps transparency). This tool decodes with libheif, the same open-source library most desktop tools use, running in your browser: no upload, no account, no queue.
