Drop in a photo, drag to position it, zoom to frame the face, and download a circular PNG. Add a border if you want one, or a solid backing colour instead of transparency. Output sizes cover the usual avatar dimensions from 128 up to 1024 pixels.

The image is cropped on a canvas in your browser and never uploaded, which matters when the photo is of you or your family.

Why it saves as PNG

The area outside the circle has to be transparent, and JPEG has no transparency at all. Saving a circular crop as JPEG produces a circle sitting on a black or white square — which is why this tool does not offer it.

PNG keeps the transparency, so the avatar sits cleanly on whatever background the site uses. If you specifically want a solid backing — some platforms handle transparency poorly — pick white or black as the background rather than saving as JPEG.

Getting a good avatar

• Fill the circle with the face. Avatars display small; a full-body shot becomes an unidentifiable smudge at 40 pixels.
• Keep the eyes near the top third. It reads as a portrait rather than a mugshot.
• Start large. Crop from the highest-resolution original you have — 512 px is a sensible output even if the site displays it smaller.
• Check it small. Shrink the result to about 48 pixels and see whether it is still recognisable.
